Most of our plans have been changed along the way and this stretch was no exception.
Sailing out from Cascais we got fair winds and everything looked really good..... for a while.
Sailing from Cascais to Madeira was supposed to be a 4 day 4 night sail. After two days and 200 nm the wind changed direction. Now it was coming straight towards us and we still had 250 nm in front of us. Being in the middle of the ocean we didn't have many options. As the wind now came from a new direction we had a discussion about what to do. Turning around to sail back to Cascais was clearly not an option. Sailing on towards Madeira would add on at least one day as we had head winds. The last option was the best, turning to port side sailing to Lanzarote. This would add 4 days to the sail making the stretch 6 days in total minimum and even though Heidi hates being at sea for many days we chose the last option.
This new plan was not without worry. We now had lots of friends, family and other people at home watching our every move and expecting us to show up on the grid in four days, hopefully in Madeira. Luckily nobody called the coastguard before we posted our first message online after six days at sea.
We chose the first land we saw that had a harbour and that was; La Graciosa. Arriving just one hour before sunrise we waited outside the marina for some light before we entered. It is really good to set your feet on solid ground after six days at sea.
